As districts announce their decisions for the Fall “return to school” plans, many of you are faced with a complex situation. While we had all hoped that the experiences of spring education would be a distant memory, the roles of parenting, teaching and working continue to collide as we collectively face the effects of COVID-19 on education.

As the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” says, entire communities must interact with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. Last year was a challenge, for everyone. Nobody was prepared for the sudden change to remote learning and the eventual longevity of the situation. While some found success when this all began, everyone learned from the experience.

Now, faced with a similar situation, communities are coming together and creatively planning for the school year ahead. Everyone is looking for ways to leverage resources available to create success for the whole family. Districts have spent the summers planning and preparing for the different scenarios. Parents are collaborating to create cohorts of students to simulate small group classrooms for remote learning. Others are setting up home classrooms for their kids.
